During his 12 years as Dean of the College of Engineering, William R. Schowalter demonstrated outstanding character, creativity, and enthusiasm. Above all, his dedication to the students and faculty of the college was always evident in his conduct. In his honor, on behalf of Engineering Council, the William R. Schowalter Scholarship was established upon his retirement in February 2001.

Recipients of this award are chosen based on their leadership skills, creativity, and encouragement of others through activities and dedication to the College of Engineering. To qualify, students must be enrolled in an engineering curriculum at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (includes students in departments that are outside of but still affiliated with the College of Engineering), be a sophomore or junior (by number of years in attendance), and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Friends of Lisle Abbot Rose, former director of public information for the College of Engineering, established a fund in his memory from which an award is made annually to recognize an outstanding senior student in engineering. In 1994, Mrs. Mildred Maddux Rose, his widow, endowed the award in perpetuity.

It is awarded to a student who most nearly approaches the ideal of technical excellence combined with cultural breadth, depth, and sensitivity. Seniors who will graduate in January, May or August of the award year are eligible. In addition to a cash award, the recipient is given an individual plaque and his/her name is placed on the permanent memorial in Engineering Hall. One recipient is selected by the college awards committee. Selection is based on scholastic activities (30%), activities outside of university courses (30%), nontechnical courses taken (20%) and an essay (20%). Chair of the college awards committee notifies associate dean for academic programs of selection.

Stanley H. Pierce was an inspiring leader in the constant endeavor for better relations between faculty and students. During his years as associate dean of the College of Engineering, he gained the admiration and respect of the students because of his sincere concern for them as individuals and as a group. He was genuinely interested in their problems and achievements, both academic and personal, and established a rapport with them. In memory of this exemplary spirit, the Stanley H. Pierce Award was established by the late W. L. Everitt.

As a guideline for the award, he proposed: “These awards would be given annually, one to the undergraduate student and the other to the faculty member, who are selected as having done the most to develop empathetic student-faculty cooperation.”  For students to qualify, they must be enrolled in an engineering curriculum at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (includes students in departments that are outside of but still affiliated with the College of Engineering) and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Letters of Recommendation are required. Recommendation writers must consist of two professors for the student award, or two students for the faculty award. It will be your responsibility to contact the recommendation writers and submit their letters

Andrea J. Culumber, BS ME 1997, was deeply involved in student activities within the College of Engineering and throughout the campus. Her creativity, enthusiasm, and positive attitude had a profound impact on all those who interacted with her. She was an excellent role model for students, and her intelligence, outgoing personality, and leadership style set a high standard for leaders on this campus. On August 11, 1998, she was killed in an automobile accident. In memory of her enthusiasm, dedication, kindness, and leadership, the Andrea J. Culumber Award has been established by the College of Engineering, Engineering Council, the Knights of St. Pat, and TRW, Inc.

This award is given annually to a student in the College of Engineering in recognition of strong leadership skills and dedicated involvement in student activities within the community. Particular weight is attributed to personal qualities such as enthusiasm, creativity, and kindness. The recipient will be a student who not only leads but is innovative and encourages others to become involved. The recipient receives a certificate at the awards convocation, and has her/his name added to a permanent plaque located in the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. To qualify, students must be enrolled in an engineering curriculum at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (includes students in departments that are outside of but still affiliated with the College of Engineering), have a junior/third year standing, and must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

During the 2007-2008 academic year, the Engineering Council created an endowment to fund two scholarships: one given to a freshman or sophomore and the other given to a junior or senior. The recipients of this award are students who demonstrate involvement for the benefit of a specific engineering department or the college as a whole. To qualify, students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be a student on campus for the following fall semester.
